The Art of Cinema 🎬

In our endeavour to stay at home during COVID-19, we work at being motivated and productive. 😷 We discover new things about ourselves, yet rely on the old. And in our downtime, we try not to get lost. Most importantly, we want to connect. ♥️ We are social beings, that rely on one other. A huge thing that makes us happy is movies. “Film as dream, film as music. No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls,” said Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. 🎥

Over the holidays, never mind all year, we have found solace in film. And during the pandemic, within our family’s ‘bubble’, we have checked many films off our bucket lists. 📝 Enjoying new movies, and old, we rush to share choices and discoveries with each other. Excitedly, we revel in the latest releases. 🌟 And through fresh eyes, we rewatch classics. Dialoguing about plot lines, and character motivations, we learn. We also argue. Over whose pick it is. The demands of passionate film buffs are many. ☝🏽

Well, this month, we have created a lovely way for everyone to have a say. Rather than our picks being cancelled out (🥺 by certain bossy snobs), we work to mesh our interests. When we experience films together -- laughing, crying, pondering, pausing and talking -- in essence, we want to feel. 💕Searching for moments of connection.

For the next two months, we have created an ‘advent calendar’ of curated film picks. 🗓 Each door has carefully chosen individual choices, as well as group ones. In an effort to avoid disagreements over what to watch (😡 oh, the fights!), and (try to ) respect differences, we each came up with 8 of our top picks, as well as 8 that all might enjoy, and we plan to rotate these choices on movie nights. 🎞🍿Foolproof. 🤷🏻‍♀️

So far, so good. 👌🏽

And when the world shuts down, with the future still vague, we want what makes us happy. Watching films together does just this! 😊

What a great idea!! Right now all of our movies are kid friendly. So last night we watched Elf.. which I still laugh out loud watching. But this is a great idea for us to do next year! We are also a movie loving family. My holiday memories are filled with the Johal’s watching movies during winter break. It Was always something I looked forward to. Speaking of movies.. Can’t wait for WW84!!
