People are upset about the recent Halloween installment, now playing. š¬ Not over the gore or violence. Even though, quite frankly, thereās a lot. After all, Michaelās on the loose. And yes, those in marginalized groups die too. āš½
Anyone up in arms over the gay and racialized characters killed needs to calm down.šSpoiler alert: Michael doesnāt discriminate -- children, women, men, black, white, gay, straight, he doesnāt care who he kills! š¤·š»āāļø
As a woman, and visible minority, I get it: discrimination is brutal. šÆ But is it possible cancel culture has run amok? š Not everything is a personal attack. Stop and think. Sometimes a scary movie is just that, a scary movie -- meant to thrill, chill, and yes, kill. Given how inclusive the new Halloween film is, I applaud it. šš½ These movies at their genesis, consisted of pretty much white middle-class characters.
Dave Chapelleās latest Netflix special āThe Closerā is fantastic. Heās at the top of his game. But it is also quite poignant. As a black man in todayās harsh world, he understands discrimination. And he recounts his experiences with the LGBTQ community, including a personal story near and dear to him. ā¤ļø
Art is meant to express, and yes sometimes it offends. None of us is the same, nor have the same thoughts, beliefs, or ideals. We were never meant to. And at some point, we are all offended by something. The world is changing. Thank God society/government is making way for inclusive laws, rights, & representation. šš½
But a comedian is meant to tease and taunt -- make us cringe, think, and yes, laugh. Pushing the envelope. Chapelle does just this. And I for one, refuse to clutch at my pearls and throw a tantrum. š š»āāļø While we may not always like it, sarcasm is allowed -- a far leap from a human rights violation.
Some of us will be attending Chapelleās recently rejected documentary screening of Untitled this November -- supporting the right to engage in art, and performance. šš»āāļø We will laugh at what we find funny, and not laugh at what we donāt.
We wonāt gather signs in the middle of the day, trying to cancel each other out. šŖ§ā
Letās save that for actual injustices of the world. š
