‘Cause we all have wings 🦋

Updated: Mar 11, 2021

Part 2 of 2...

We all grow up with differing values & ideals -- one of the gifts of reflection is that we can try to pay forward some of what we maybe lacked.

Happiness looks different today. It is a concept in and of itself -- strived for, sought after, and definitely questioned. I probably ask our dog Johnny ten times a day, “Are you okay?” and over and over, “I love you, okay?” 🤷🏻‍♀️

In the series Yellowstone, the amazing Kevin Costner is John Dutton, a hardened father who remarks that he is just not one of those Dads to ask his adult children, “How was your day?” In fact, when he then tries to, an argument ensues, reassuring him that not asking is best. 😞

And there we are, many of us left fending for ourselves.

Recently we watched ‘Mystify: Michael Hutchence’, the story of INXS’ original frontman. What a life -- and ultimately, death -- he lived. Lost and then found over and over in the few decades that he lived, through the music, he spoke to us. Iconic rock and roller that he was, he inspired. Until he didn’t.

I recall my boyfriend (husband now) wanting to travel, and be sure of commitment. While he took that time, I in response had Never Tear Us Apart on repeat in my car. Over and over, I imagined being on that bridge in Prague - alone, and misunderstood. Solace found in a tragic melody.

‘I told you

That we could fly

'Cause we all have wings

But some of us don't know why…’

Close friend U2’s Bono asked Hutchence what rock & roll was, to which Michael answered, “Liberation”. And using his own voice, he gave us a voice, a way to be free, and different that was special and adored. An alternative to feeling alone and lost.

As we pass the torch, we encourage kids today to think and feel and express. That fine line between what they are supposed to do, and what we want them to do much more blurred. Naysayers will maintain that being tough and not indulging is still best. I say no. Indulge. Talk. Feel.

And especially in a pandemic, we all share the same gratitude over those we love working to get up every day, ready to take on their world. 🙏🏽 For many of us, throughout our lives it was just expected.

Today we want our youth to scream for more, and demand of this universe what we never did. What we finally demand now -- for what is entirely their right, happiness on an epic scale. ♥️
