A Thousand Splendid Suns ☀️

“...love can move people to act in unexpected ways and move them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with startling heroism.”

World events of late, prompted a reread of Khaled Hosseini’s breathtaking novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns. 📖

A lot has happened since its 2007 publication -- in the world, and in our lives. In my case, now a seasoned wife, and mother of young adults, perspective shifts. And given the turbulence in Afghanistan, it pains me to read it again. 🇦🇫 In retelling the story of Mariam and Laila, to my husband last night, I started to cry. 😢

The reign of the Taliban, the violence, fear, and tragedy are real. Once again, art imitates life imitating art.

Bad things happen. Unforgiving acts happen. Evil in the name of good happens. And people, in life and in death leave their mark on us.

Somehow, we try to make sense of it all. 😔

And faith and hope happen too. As we struggle to survive, no matter where we are in the world, we can hold on only to that. During these dark, dark days while it may offer little comfort, it is all we have. 🙏🏽

Human will is a remarkable thing. ☝🏽

“I'm sorry,” Laila says, marvelling at how every Afghan story is marked by death and loss and unimaginable grief. And yet, she sees, people find a way to survive, to go on.
